Honey is judged on several characteristics including taste, color, and clarity. Moisture content is also judged using a refractometer. This device uses light to measure the amount of moisture in a small sample of honey using a standardized scale. Judges also look for perfection in cleanliness of the jar, how full the jar is, and overall presentation. Hundreds of entries are judged each year in January. Winners are then displayed at our state capitol to raise awareness of the importance of the honey bee with our state politicians.
Suzbees has had award winning honey in the state of New Jersey since 2020 with three new ribbons being added in 2025.
